How to calculate VAT in the United Kingdom

To add VAT

Multiply the net price by 1.20. A jacket priced at £80 net becomes £96 gross (£80 × 1.20). The £16 difference is the VAT collected on behalf of HMRC.

To remove VAT

Divide the gross price by 1.20. A receipt for £120 gross contains £100 net and £20 VAT (£120 ÷ 1.20 = £100). Simple arithmetic — performed flawlessly above.

For the reduced rate, divide or multiply by 1.05. For zero-rated goods (children's clothes, most food, books, newspapers), no VAT applies — but you must still record the transaction.

Frequently Asked

The questions everyone asks about UK VAT

Straight answers, in plain English. No sign up. No paywall. No "download our 47-page guide" pop-up. Just the bits you actually came here for.

How do I calculate VAT in the UK?+

To add 20% VAT, multiply the net price by 1.20. A £100 item becomes £120 — that £20 is the VAT. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by 1.20. The calculator above does both, instantly, free, with no sign up.

How much is VAT in the UK?+

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. There's also a reduced rate of 5% (for things like domestic gas and electricity) and a zero rate of 0% (for most food, books, children's clothes and public transport).

How do I work out VAT from a gross amount?+

Divide the gross figure by 1.20 to get the net price, then subtract the net from the gross to find the VAT. Example: £240 gross ÷ 1.20 = £200 net, so the VAT is £40. Or just paste the gross into the calculator above in 'Remove VAT' mode and we'll show the lot.

How do I reverse-calculate VAT?+

Same thing as removing VAT — you're working backwards from the gross (VAT-inclusive) figure to find the net (pre-VAT) price. Switch the calculator to 'Remove VAT' and type the gross amount. The net, the VAT, and the rate are shown side by side.

What is the current standard rate of UK VAT?+

20%. It's been 20% since 4 January 2011, when it rose from 17.5%. We update this calculator the moment HMRC changes anything — so the figure you see is always the figure you should be using.

How do I calculate VAT on a calculator?+

On a regular calculator: type the net price, press × 1.20, hit equals — that's the VAT-inclusive total. To go the other way, type the gross price, press ÷ 1.20, hit equals for the net. Or skip the keystrokes entirely and use the tool above.

When does a UK business have to register for VAT?+

When taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period (the 2024/25 threshold). You can also register voluntarily below that — often a smart move if your customers are themselves VAT-registered businesses and can reclaim it.

Is this VAT calculator really free?+

Yes — properly free. No sign up, no email harvesting, no advertisements interrupting your working day, no 'unlock the full version' nonsense. Bookmark it, share it with your accountant, use it 50 times a day. We'd rather it be useful than monetised.

Do I need to create an account?+

No. There is no account, no login, no password, and no cookie banner asking for your soul. Open the page, type a number, get an answer. The way the internet should work.

Is the answer accurate enough for my VAT return?+

The arithmetic uses HMRC's standard rounding rules and is accurate to the penny. As with anything tax-related, double-check unusual cases (margin schemes, partial exemption, imports) with HMRC or a qualified accountant — but for everyday VAT maths, it's spot on.
